Adaptation Innovation Development: Examples Across the Criminal Justice Realm

When we must answer, how are we going to be able to adapt?  How are we going to be able to measure “it”?  How might it shape ‘our’ future? This session will offer examples of innovations, modifications, and/or adaptations either out of pressing or imminent circumstances (e.g. COVID-19, civil unrest), awareness/need for change or scientific study/discoveries.

 

Speakers:

Shila Hawk, PhD

Dr. Hawk is the lead data scientist and law enforcement expert at Applied Research Services (ARS), her work focuses on improving public safety and wellness. She serves as a subject matter expert and data scientist to practitioners, academics, research centers, and policy institutes nationwide.

Heather Perez

Ms. Perez is an expert in violence reduction strategies, strategic action planning, partnership building, research partner acquisition and drug market intervention training.  Over the past nearly 20 years at Michigan State University, School of Criminal Justice, Ms. Perez has worked on the Project Safe Neighborhoods National Evaluation and Training and Technical Assistance team, Drug Market Intervention Training and Technical Assistance Initiative, Comprehensive Anti-Gang Initiative, Innovations Suite Training and Technical Assistance team, Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network, various National Training and Technical Assistance requests and international exchanges with Chile and Argentina. Ms. Perez has served as a Department of Justice Peer Reviewer for 12 years. In most recent efforts, Ms. Perez has assisted with the development of the Innovations Suite Researcher-Practitioner Fellows Academy, Violence Reduction Assessment Tool, Strategic/Grant Action Plan, and Violent Crime Reduction Workshop. 

Ms. Perez recently joined CNA as an Associate Advisor.  She is currently the Project Director for work supporting the National Initiatives, Law Enforcement and Prosecution, Crime and Corrections Analyst in Residence Program as well as a Subject Matter Expert on the Smart Policing Initiatives grant.

Ms. Perez has also worked for the Institute for Law and Justice and the National Criminal Justice Reference Service. With a Master of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from the
